Last night, SydneyPubGuide.net's intrepid reporters headed to the White Cockatoo, made an attempt on eating the whole schnitzel, drank a fair few St Peter's Brewery Blondes and won the trivia.
"And that's unusual?? You guys win a lot."*, I hear you ask. Well, yes it is unusual. You see, we joined late and were second last at the halfway point.
Mr Trivia's system goes like this: Normal two rounds, points are awarded as usual. Final round, you may gamble a given proportion of the points gained in the first two rounds on a single, relatively fiendish, multiple-choice question. If you're right, you get twice your gambled amount added to your points. if you're wrong, you lose the gambled amount.
Last night, as we were second-last, we bet the farm. And were the only team with the right answer.
This is a very interesting system as it adds an extra degree of uncertainty to a pub game which can degenerate into 'same team, same win' from week to week. It means it's possible for anyone to win, providing they employ a certain amount of strategy. It's even possible to throw the last question entirely away, bet nothing, and still win.
Overall, I'd recommend checking out this system - it's being employed at the Cockatoo, the Newington Inn and two RSLs in the Inner West, and no doubt will spread.

review by: Jason... and a welcome respite from the usual Friday night crush were the hallmarks of our recent visit to the cockatoo. Our first review visit several months ago was possibly too alcohol-fueled to generate a good review but this time we were less lathered and managed to partake of some food in the course of two visits.
Ordering a $10 beefburger and a $14 Schnitzel, we expected relatively average portions, but we were surprised when we were presented with plates overhung on all sides by food, including a schnitzel so large we just had to get a picture (see photo gallery)
a re-visit after letting the food settle resulted in a few friendly games of pool in a convivial atmosphere for a friday night, and we tottered off quite satisfied just after last orders, and jumped on a train back to pubguide HQ most contented.
