Looks classic, but feels too worn. (26 Jan 2003)

The Nelson is a rangy pub in classic Aussie style, with a large central bar surrounded by stools, a classic tiled decor and much battered memorabilia. Unfortunately the main bar exudes a fairly down-at-heel atmosphere, personified by the backround waft of stale beer as you walk in. The lounge bar has a slightly more comfortable feel, but still suffers a little from the moth-eaten feel of the place. After race meetings and sporting events the place fills up a lot more, but even full it's not comfortable enough for us. The pool tables do a brisk trade with workies and locals shooting the breeze over a couple of games, and the beer is good and cold. If you're not bothered about the atmosphere and just want a few quiet games and a couple of cooling VBs, go for it, but don't go with high expectations.

Don't ever, ever change! This pub rocks and should retain it's charm. I hope they never think of doing the place up, Sydney is full of wanky bars already.

not classy at all, but heaps of space, lots to do, play poole, listen to the duke box, sit in the absolutley wonderful restaurant with the most fantastic pub food, lounge bar is lovely, personally prefer the public bar!

truly one of the last great pubs in sydney, it kicks ass, has a great varierty of beer and the food is high class. a good place to drink anyday, pity about the blowins
