Searching for a venue in Sydney a month before Xmas proved to be a little hard as I had left it too late. I found a function room at the Gaslight Inn which fitted my requirements - central, nice space, open til 3am. From the beginning however I was apprehensive, they charged a $500 fee (most places you just need to spend a certain amount behind the bar); & the Manager had a rude, unfriendly attitude.
I persevered however & the night came. During the party the Manager stormed around aggressively with a walkie talkie with very negative behaviour, creating a very bad vibe. It was a tame party of 30 somethings, dancing had only just begun when she called the police & shut us down at 12am. It was a huge surprise & the reason was because she didn't like the behaviour of one of my friends. My friend was an eppileptic (which she knew) and his behaviour was not offensive or aggressive, a little erratic but not causing any trouble.
It was very embarrassing & upsetting for me that the whole party was shut down. I am very surprised there was not more tolerance in an inner city pub, & would advise people think twice before chosing this as a venue.
review by: CatieI do have a soft spot for the Gaslight, especially now it's been joined by its rather more looming next-door neighbour the
Colombian. It's a slightly dingy little asymmetrical pub with a central island bar, which is often packed to the brim at weekends. My favourite time of day, though is when it's a little quieter, when you can get a table by the window, sit back and enjoy your beer with the quiet sussuration of chatter unbroken by raised voices of thumping music.
It's not the best pub in Sydney, by a long way, but we like it.
