Not a square foot of wall is wasted. Almost every inch of this low-ceilinged venue is taken up by posters, signed pictures, records and other musical memorabilia. Still maintaining its reputation as Sydney's premier small music venue, the Basement is also a popular lunch spot for folks from the surrounding office buildings.
The dance floor drops down from bar level, then back up to the stage, giving two tiers for a good view of the on-stage action, and what a lot of action this stage has seen.
On our review visit, we had tickets to see the amazing Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, and let's say it didn't disappoint. The Basement is about the only live music venue in Sydney where you can hear the band clearly from any part of the bar - thanks to a very clear, well planned sound system. The Bar menu is well worth a look pre-gig and when the gig's on, well, the best thing you can do is just watch.
This place has played host to some of the best live acts on the planet, and will continue to do so for some time yet - there's nothing here to challenge it in our view. recommended.
