The lower end of Oxford street is a nightlife Mecca, and pretty much every pub in this stretch has been through major renovations within the last few years trying to keep up. From the Burdekin at the foot of the hill upwards to Taylor Square, The Brighton's downstairs bar stands out, for me, as the only home-cooked pub around. It's a small, wedge shaped bar which feels very cosy , due in part to the size and due in part to the feel of the decor. It's also a very friendly little spot - last time I was in I got into a conversation with the doorman about computers which lasted, on and off, the entire time I was there. Upstairs has been renovated, sure, but it's downstairs that I tend to prefer, especially in the early evening befor the street starts to get crazy. I'm a sucker for the more 'traditional' cosy pubs, and this one is certainly worth a look in. There's a review of the upstairs bar in the pipeline folks! stay calm.
